Whenever anybody mentions Prague it conjurs up images of narrow cobbled streets, stunning medieval architecture, the meandering river Vltava and cheap pints of strong Beer.

Prague is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cities not only in Europe, but in the entire world. Its modern day reputation is built on over eleven centuries of cultural development stretching back to the city's founding in 885.

The city's heyday was during the fourteenth century when many of its most famous buildings and structures such as the Charles Bridge, Saint Vitus Cathedral and Charles University were constructed. Today, a considerable area of Old Town Praha is protected by UNESCO.

Having shaken off the shackles of Soviet control, which lasted from the post-war years up until the beginning of the 1990's, Czechoslovakia was split up into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Prague has been the dynamic capital of the Czech Republic since 1993 and must now be considered as truly being a global city. Its population is well over one million and, if you include its outlying urban areas, its total population is actually close to 2.5 million.
